Non-Violence in Thought of Imam Zeinn Al-Abidin's (Peace Be Upon Him): Analytical Study on Its Educational and Social Dimensions

Abstract

This research examines the principle of non-violence in the thought of Imam Zayd al-Abidin (Peace Be Upon Him) as a strategic, moral, and educational choice during a critical phase of Islamic history, following the tragedy of Karbala and the subsequent political and social violence and oppression. The Imam confronts that phase with alternative tools based on reforming man from within, not by confronting the authority with weapons, but by countering it through a value-based and spiritual project founded upon supplication, education, and self-purification.

The study proceeds from a premise stating that non-violence in the thought of Imam Zayn al-Abidin is not a negative stance or isolationism; rather, it is a behavior originating from an integrated reformist vision aiming to build religious and social awareness and to renew the relationship between man and his Lord, and between man and his society. The research analyzes the Al-Sahifa al-Sajjadiyya and the Risalat al-Huquq [Epistle of Rights] as profound manifestations of this non-violent thought, for they together form an educational and spiritual school that seeks to rehabilitate the individual according to the principles of mercy, forbearance, self-control, and faith in the possibility of reforming the other.

The study concludes that the thought of Imam Zayn al-Abidin (Peace Be Upon Him) represents a unique paradigm for resisting tyranny—not through violence, but through quiet education and deep patience—and that his non-violent project remains valid today as a model in confronting violence and despotism, and reviving Islamic values in their educational and human dimensions.
